The Second Light --- Lamp The Second Light is an artful representation inspired by the natural cycle of life, in which we build on our past to illuminate our present. Made from recycled materials, it transforms the mundanity of everyday, discarded objects into a beautiful source of new light and energy. Its sphere-like shape is a metaphor for how the cycle of life restarts continuously; just as a ring has no end or beginning, it reinforces the point of view that our life doesn’t end when we die. The sculpture intentionally imitates cempazuchitl flowers (or marigolds), which are frequently used in Dia de los Muertos celebrations. The tabs of aluminum cans are recycled and unified to create a flower-like shape, indicating the passage between the two worlds. The accompanying music provides tonal guidance for crossing to the other side. The Second Light’s recyclable materials represent the essence of giving a second chance not just to objects, but to ourselves.
