La Catrina is a colorful character that represents high society. La Catrina, also know as La Calavera Garbancera, translated in English as “elegant skull,” was created between 1910 and 1913 by Mexican artists. This elegant skull describes how a woman
who was ashamed of her indigenous origin, dressed to imitate the French and Spanish colonial style which included a pompous feather hat and the wearing of an excessive amount of makeup in order to camouflage their brown skin color, appearing more European.
